More Drawing Warm-up

Splunker and Bentley are always two of our favorite characters at BugPudding comics.

Drawing digitally on “glass” and taking advantage of all the Illustrator software tools really speeds up the cartooning process, but for me, going back to cartooning with real lead pencils and real paper is fun and I have really missed it.

Bentley

My first warm-up post was mostly of Splunker, the earthworm. These next pencil drawing’s group of characters are of Bentley, the snail.

Bentley

Bentley was one of my earliest BugPudding characters.

Splunker and Bentley are always fun to put into our comic stories. Having no arms or legs don’t slow these guys down in the comedy business.

Next in my warm-up drawings is Louie, the frog.

Louie The Frog

Louie mostly pals around with Slippery and Slimey, his frog cousins.

Chester

I really enjoyed doing a warm-up drawing of Chester, the parrot. I’ve been drawing these characters for years, but not recently on actual pencil and paper. Chester always gets a big part in the BugPudding comics. He partners mostly with Dr. Beauregard Squirrel as a villain, but sometimes he plays the part of Constable Taube in the Pimlock Blomes Adventures.

Here are some of the drawing tools that I am using. I use a lot of different pencils. I use plain pencils but also clutch pencils  and mechanical pencils. I use various HB, 4H and 2H pencils as well as colored pencils. I like using “stick” style erasers but also kneaded putty erasers. I keep a brush to clean up my eraser dust as I draw.  The scale divider is useful for planning layout scales and proportions. These are all just basic drawing tools.

I’m making progress, but it’s taking some time. There is more to follow. I’m having fun.

  1. Bonjour,

Translated to English : I’m 80 years old and starting watercolors. I’ve just read your advice and documentation; it’s very informative and shows me how difficult this learning process can be. I’m going to try to fully understand the water cycle and its effects, and familiarize myself with the different states of pigments.
Thank you for all the advice you share.
